Block & Brickwork

Retaining walls, garden walls and structural blockwork, built plumb and true from the footings up — with proper engineering brick DPC coursing and drainage behind retaining structures considered from the start.

Why retaining walls fail

The most common reason a retaining wall bulges, cracks, or fails outright isn't the blockwork itself — it's water pressure building up behind it with nowhere to go. A wall built without proper drainage behind it is effectively holding back both soil and water, which is far more load than the same wall with correct land drainage installed. Because drainage is our background, we build that in from the start rather than treating it as optional.

Footings are dug to proper depth and width for the height and load of the wall, not guessed at, and blockwork is built plumb and true throughout — not just at the corners.

What we build

How we approach it

We dig proper footings sized to the wall's height and the ground conditions, and for retaining walls we install a land drain and permeable backfill behind the structure so water pressure doesn't build up over time. It's the difference between a wall that lasts decades and one that needs rebuilding in five years.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my retaining wall bulging or cracking?
Most commonly, water pressure building up behind the wall with no drainage to relieve it. Left unaddressed, this pressure will eventually cause a wall to fail. A proper repair usually means addressing the drainage behind it, not just patching the visible crack.
What is engineering brick DPC coursing, and why does it matter?
It's a course of dense, low-absorption brick laid at damp-proof level, which stops ground moisture tracking up into the wall above. Leaving it out, or using the wrong brick, is a common cause of damp problems in garden and boundary walls.
Can you install drainage behind a retaining wall?
Yes — this is standard practice on any retaining wall we build, since it's what actually prevents the wall from failing under water pressure over time.
